So today, as the Elm City Bloggers were blogging away, I noticed a team of about 10 to 12 special police officers arresting a young man in front of the Double Kutz barber shop across the street from the school. A couple of the bloggers noticed this as well.
The first thing I thought - and said out loud - was "poor guy." The two students who were looking out the window with me said, "what do you mean 'poor guy'?" They added that "he's probably a criminal." To me, he appeared to be another lost young man, about to go jail for making a bad mistake, whatever it was.
Too often over the last four decades since I've been in New Haven, I have seen young people getting harassed and arrested, and I can't help but wonder how they felt... the sense of panic must be overwhelming at that moment when they know they're going to jail, or worse, prison. I also wonder what they did to get arrested and could such an outcome have been prevented.
Young people out there, please try to ALWAYS make good decisions, because you never know, your freedom could be taken away JUST LIKE THAT!!!
